Workshops

First Amendment and the Press

A new workshop design by legal professionals to explore the implications and meaning of the first amendment to the press.

Freedom of the Press: Read All About It!

Democratic governance requires an informed and involved citizenry. There is no doubt that the media has a key role in self-government, but there is much skepticism and concern about how well it is doing its job today.

Using a case-study approach, this program will emphasize becoming thoughtful, critical consumers of media, examining the accuracy, understandability and authority of the messages communicated, with an eye toward improving student awareness of media’s impact on our social values and political attitudes and the cynicism that results from an array of often unreliable media sources.

Students will come away from this workshop prepared to become more engaged citizens with an understanding of the necessary tension between the freedom of the press and the government in a democratic society.
